Tag & TagSet Model (EN50090-6-2)

Overview

The EN 50090-6-2 Tagging Model defines a semantic framework for classification, annotation, and metadata management within building automation systems. This model provides standard vocabularies for describing functional characteristics, operational behaviors, quantity kinds, and contextual information. These vocabularies enable semantic annotation of equipment, datapoints, locations, and application functions. The tagging system supports interoperability by providing common classification schemes. These schemes help with system integration, data analysis, and automated reasoning across different building automation technologies.

For instance, the subclass tag "LocationUsage" defines usage for a location. Tags within this subclass can specify usage as a living room or a kitchen or both.

An example of a tag set is QualityKind. Consider a datapoint representing a room temperature sensor that measures the temperature of the air in a given room. The tag set combines individual tags (air, temperature, and room) to express their belonging together in a new concept called PhenomenonQualityKind.

Tag

EN50090-6-2 defines the following tag categories:

  • en50090-6-2/tag: Tag represents the foundational base class for all classification and annotation entities within the tagging model. A tag describes the data or content to which it applies. Tags are typically nonhierarchical keywords (individuals). Datapoints, application functions, internet bookmarks, digital images, videos, files, and similar resources use these keywords.
    • EquipmentType: EquipmentType represents tangible or movable equipment. Systems can observe or control this equipment as part of the building control system. The tag category contains individuals that describe equipment such as sensors, actuators, motors, luminaires, valves, and switches. It also includes other controllable building automation components. This contrasts with passive building equipment, for example pipes or ducts.
    • Locality: Locality represents the location-related context for measurements/adjustments of equipment or observations/actuations of phenomena. The tag category contains individuals that describe the spatial context. This includes where an action takes place or where the system installs equipment. It expresses a relation to a space as a place of action.
    • LocationUsage: LocationUsage represents the functional purpose and operational characteristics of spatial locations within building automation contexts. The tag category contains individuals that describe the location's intended purpose.
    • Origin: Origin represents the source or derivation of data, commands, and operational information within building automation systems. The tag category contains individuals that describe a specific application data source of a Point. This applies when a higher-level application control affects the Point input. This differs from the common control loop.
    • PhenomenonType: PhenomenonType represents phenomena (including substances) that can only be indirectly observed or actuated upon. This applies as part of the building control system. The tag category contains individuals that describe phenomena such as air, water, light, person, wind, rain, and other environmental conditions or substances. The tag category does not describe concrete existing things. For example, it would not describe the person John Smith.
    • PointFunctionType: PointFunctionType represents the specific functional role or purpose that datapoints, action points, and event points serve. This applies within building automation applications. The tag category contains individuals that describe the role a Point plays. The control loop of an application function defines this role.
    • PointInterface: PointInterface represents the runtime interworking interface type of a point. The tag category contains individuals that describe the runtime interworking interface type of a point, such as input, output, parameter, or diagnostic point.
    • PointOperation: PointOperation represents the specific data access and manipulation capabilities that Points provide within building automation systems. The tag category contains individuals that express how the system interprets a Point value (mathematically or logically) to affect system behavior.
    • Protocol: Protocol represents the communication technologies and standards used for data exchange within building automation systems. The tag category contains individuals allowing to express that a Point value originates from another system with a specific/underlying communication protocol.
    • QuantityKind: QuantityKind represents the type or nature of measurable physical quantities within building automation systems. The tag category contains individuals that describe the numerical quantity of the measurement/adjustment (equipment) or observation/actuation (phenomenon), such as Temperature, Illuminance, PositionVector, AngularVelocity, VolumeFlowRate, and other measurable physical properties.
    • StateType: StateType represents the operational and status conditions that building automation entities can exhibit. The tag category contains individuals that describe specific state types in the control loop of an Application Function. An individual state type results from interpreting process variables or other states in the control loop. Each state type has a semantically predefined, discrete meaning. The system determines this meaning using context knowledge from the domain of building control. A state type does not carry a specific runtime value. Instead, the control loop requires at least two state types to form the set of applicable options.
    • Trade: Trade represents a building automation discipline and professional domain that associates with an aspect or Point. The tag category contains individuals that describe the specific application area or operational domain where a Point, Application Function, or FunctionPoint operates. Trade subdivides knowledge by technical field or electrical and mechanical installations.

TagSet

EN50090-6-2 defines the following tag set categories:

  • en50090-6-2/tag:TagSet: TagSet represents combinations of different tags in a set. These combinations express joint concepts with specific semantical meaning. A tag set combines individual tags (such as PhenomenonType, QuantityKind, and Locality). This forms more complex semantic constructs. These constructs describe building automation entities comprehensively.
    • OperationKind: OperationKind represents the functional behavior patterns and operational characteristics of datapoints and application functions. An operation kind describes how the system uses the quantity kind value of a specific 'type of interest' from a QK or the state type value. The same OK individual MAY refer to arbitrary QK individuals.
    • QualityKind: QuantityKind represents the type or nature of physical quantities that systems can measure, monitor, or control within building automation. The tag category contains individuals that describe the numerical quantity of the measurement/adjustment (equipment) or observation/actuation (phenomenon).
      • EquipmentQualityKind
      • PhenomenonQualityKind

Application Function Tagging Examples

An Application Function typically acts on an Equipment or a Phenomenon. In the following example, the Application Function acts on the room temperature (Phenomenon). You can express this using the appropriate tags and relationship (actsOnPhenomenonQualityKind or adjustsEquipmentQualityKind).

Point Tagging Examples

Temperature Sensor Example

Just like with Application Function tagging, you can apply the same concepts to the Point. Therefore, you can reuse the same tags. The example below illustrates a sensor datapoint that contains a room temperature value (observesPhenomenonQualityKind). The process value (pv) indicates that the temperature value is either measured or calculated as an absolute value in degrees Celsius (DEG), representing a specific real-world value.

Location Tagging Examples

Location Usage

The following example illustrates how to describe a room's usage using Tags. Since a room can serve multiple purposes simultaneously, you can assign multiple "LocationUsage" tags to the same Location (Room_162). Because "LocationUsage" tags are individuals, you can extend them in an application-specific manner.
